Charge: The Global Popular Music team is seeking applications for research and creative activity fellowships that relate to next year’s focus, Musical Bodies. In our theme for 2021, the Global Popular Music Team of Platform asks after the status of the body in the production and reception of musical sound.
Projects should have some interest in bringing to light the following questions: What is a “musical body”? Is it organic or technological, individual or collective, affective or discursive? How do the dynamics of embodiment—where gender, age, race, and sexuality play defining roles—affect popular music, and how does music address such issues of embodiment? In what ways do "musical bodies" sound? Musical bodies are also free or incarcerated, migrant or rooted, enduring or ephemeral. Musical bodies are bodies of work—an artist or ensemble’s known corpus; but also, what’s in the vault, or cast off as an “alternate take.” Global Popular Music represents a uniquely variegated prism through which to ask questions about the transformations of embodiment through the ages and as experienced today.
Selected applicants must commit to attending monthly meeting of the Global Popular Music team and present a portion of their work at a symposium to be held in Fall of 2021.
Description: Event & Residency Grants are understood to support the applicant for a specific upcoming event (installation, show, presentation, performance, lecture) or residency (a multi-day event where an invited guest interacts with multiple units on campus, or a symposium, where several invited guests come to campus together) created or overseen by the applicant. In light of current travel restrictions and guidelines, we will also be considering digital events and residencies for this cycle.
Eligibility: All IU-Bloomington tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply. Those employed at IUB but not on the tenure track are eligible to apply, provided they demonstrate the relevance of their proposal to the research goals of Platform.
Requirements:
- A 2-3 page proposal clearly detailing 1) the nature and goals the event or residency; 2) anticipated dates, locations, and other logistics; 3) intended audiences; 4) any related deliverables or outcomes; and 5) a budget. The letter should also include 6) a description of how the event or residency relates to the annual focus of Global Popular Music.
- CV
- Letter of support from your Chair or Dean. If the applicant is not TT, the letter should detail the role of research measures in evaluative criteria.
Criteria: Successful applicants must describe a prospective audience for this event, and will be able to articulate how that research contributes to the advancement of the collaboration. Research projects and/or creative projects will be funded under this grant. Applications should include letters of interest from other campus partners. If those letters are unavailable by the deadline, a short note from interested on-campus partners will suffice. Proposals from more than one person are especially welcome. Proposals that include components for undergraduate research and/or community involvement are especially welcome. Preference will be given to proposals headed by teams or collaborative effort.
Funding is not be used for events or exhibitions that are recurring, or anything not specifically related to the collaboration goals of Platform.
